Understanding and managing the impact of child sexual abuse: A course for Professionals
Overview:
This course has been designed for both new and experienced workers responsible for the investigation, assessment and case management of children, young people and their families where there concerns about sexual abuse and trauma. It aims to provide participants with a basic understanding of the impact of sexual abuse and trauma upon children and young people, to increase professionals understanding of their roles and responsibilities in multi-agency working and to highlight some key issues pertinent to investigation, assessment and case management. It is of use to participants who have no previous knowledge or experience in this area but also to experienced professionals wishing to re-fresh or enhance their knowledge. The course will involve a mixture of presentation, exercises, video and discussion and each participant will receive a handout pack.
Course aims:
- To provide an introduction to the dynamics of sexual abuse
- To consider the impact of this upon children, non-offending partners and other family members and how this may affect their behaviour and development.
- To help explain why some traumatised children display problematic, unusual or risk taking behaviours
- To identify key issues in respect to investigation and assessment
- To provide an overview of the key care, case management and intervention needs of such children and their families
- To highlight the multi-agency tasks and duties in identifying, assessing and providing intervention for such children
- To provide participants with an understanding of the need to adopt an integrated approach to such work and how all professionals can have a role in responding to children's therapeutic care / treatment needs
- To consider the requirements of safeguarding / child protection in such work
- To help participants identify when specialist advice, consultation or intervention is needed
- To consider what research and clinical practice tells us about what intervention helps children recover
