Internet offenders and public protection

A course for those working in public protection roles

Our one-day course looks at the links between online and offline behaviours and how practitioners might make sense of concerning information, feeding into risk management strategies which are proportionate and meaningful.  It will be of particular interest to police officers and other public protection professionals.

This training course explores the range of sexual offences perpertrated through the internet and what motivates different types of internet offenders.  Based on research about offending and risk of reoffending, the course enables you to better understand:

  • The latest information on prevalence, offenders and victims
  • The function of internet offending behaviour for different offenders
  • Typologies of internet offenders
  • The relationship with 'hands on' sexual abuse
  • How to differentiate risk indicators from contextual and legal considerations
  • How to reach evidence-based judgements as to appropriate risk management strategies
  • Practical strategies for engaging the offender (and family members) in addressing inappropriate or illegal use of technology

Drawing upon our research and treatment work, our facilitators will also explain:

  • Characteristics of offenders
  • The range of motivations for internet offending
  • Assumptions and biases in the assessment of internet offenders
  • Apparent psychological similarities and differences between internet-only and contact abusers
  • Understanding and managing specific risks

During the day, you will consider the issues through practical case examples, including video case studies.

The course also allows you to explore and discuss your own case examples and practise examining the offending behaviour in the context of the typologies presented.
