Caring for children and young people who have experienced sexual abuse and trauma

Course Overview

This course is designed for foster carers, foster care social workers and social workers supporting children in foster placements. It focuses on both younger children and adolescents and will be of use to experienced or new carers. The first day will focus upon sexual offending dynamics and the implications for children; the second day upon the psychological impact of sexual abuse and trauma upon children; and the third day will focus upon practical therapeutic care strategies. The course will involve a mixture of presentation, exercises and discussion and each participant will be given a training pack.

Course aims:

  • To provide a basic introduction to the impact of sexual abuse and trauma upon children and their families
  • To consider the impact of these experiences upon children and how this may affect their behaviour and development.
  • To identify the key care and therapeutic needs of such children
  • To consider a range of therapeutic care strategies and ways in which carers can help children recover and support any therapeutic input.
  • To identify key issues in respect to safe care and risk management
  • To help carers identify when specialist assessment / intervention is required
  • To consider the requirements of child protection procedures
  • To provide an opportunity for carers and workers to discuss their concerns, worries and questions
