Assessing pre-pubescent children with inappropriate sexual behaviours
Summary:
This is a course designed for professionals responsible for initial and comprehensive assessments of pre-pubescent children and their families where there are concerns about the child’s sexual behaviours. The course will help practitioners distinguish between ‘normal’ sexual development and those behaviours that elicit adult concerns and present a risk to the child or others. It will focus upon explaining why children develop such behaviour; assessment skills; making recommendations for intervention; the needs of children, carers and professionals; risk management strategies & safe care issues.. The course will involve a mixture of presentation, exercises, video and discussion and each participant will receive a handout pack.
Course Aims
- To enable participants distinguish between those sexual behaviours which are developmentally expected, those that are inappropriate and those which are harmful
- To help participants consider the aetiology of sexual behaviour problems and be aware of the facts and myths in this area of work, drawing upon current research and practice
- To help participants develop skills and knowledge necessary for undertaking initial and comprehensive assessments of these children and their families / carers
- To help participants develop case formulations which take account of relevant predisposing, precipitating, maintaining and protective factors
- To help participants identify and evaluate risk
- To identify key therapeutic care needs of such children people and the role of parents, carers and other professionals in the work
- To assist practitioners in making informed recommendations about need, future intervention and risk management
- To introduce practitioners to some useful techniques and practical direct work ideas for use with both children and their families
- To consider such work in the context of a child’s developmental needs, language, gender, ethnicity, disability or experience of trauma
- To help practitioners consider immediate intervention, risk management and safe care strategies according to the assessed need
