Adolescents who display harmful sexual behaviours
1 day awareness course
This course is designed for any carers and other professionals who may work with or care for adolescents who display inappropriate or harmful sexual behaviours. It is an introductory course and does not require participants to have any previous knowledge or experience in this area of work. The course will involve a mixture of presentation, exercises and discussion and each participant will receive a handout pack.
Course Objectives
- To increase participants’ knowledge & understanding of young people who sexually harm
- To provide information on this subject based on current research
- To highlight some of the myths and realities in such work
- To provide an introduction to some theories of how young people develop such behaviours
- To provide an overview of assessment & intervention issues
- To identify some key issues for therapeutic care, managing risk and meeting young people’s needs
- To help participants identify when specialist assessment / therapy is required
- To highlight some issues and dilemmas about therapeutic provision
- To provide participants with an understanding of the need to adopt an integrated approach to such work and how all professionals need to work together and play a role in responding to young people’s therapeutic care / treatment needs
- To provide participants with an opportunity to discuss and share their questions, fears and worries and to consider their future knowledge needs
