Recognising female sexual abuse of children: consciousness raising

A training event informed by research and our own assessment and treatment programme for women who sexually abuse children.

Course overview

Recognition of the scale and effects of female sexual abuse continues to be hampered by societal denial. Agencies react very differently when allegations are made about a woman rather than a man. This results in lack of treatment for the women and inappropriate responses to child and adult survivors of their abuse. Consciousness raising as a stand-alone event is valuable for multi-agency groups.

Course aims

  • To describe research based female offender typologies
  • To describe common offending patterns based on clinical experience
  • To identify impact issues for child victims linked to the above
  • To enable participants to assess risk in relation to female sexual offending more effectively
  • To enable participants to recognise key aspects of an appropriate treatment programme for female sexual offenders
